Where We Were Born, Our Roots Grow Deep
ArborScape is blessed to work in and around Woodstock, Vermont, an area with a long and storied history of conservation and land stewardship. It was in Woodstock in 1864 that George Perkins Marsh, responding to vast deforestation in the Green Mountain State and throughout New England, published one of the founding texts of the environmental movement, Man and Nature. Soon after, Frederick Billings bought the Marsh farm, and many others in the area, and pioneered in practice the conservation ethic that Marsh had similarly conceived.
Today, the Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park “tells the story of conservation history and the evolving nature of land stewardship in America,” and is home to the oldest continually managed forest in the country.
